Michael J. Lafferty, age 70 of Big Rapids, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 13, 2017. He was born August 29, 1946, in Fallon, Nevada, the son of James and Frances (Harmon) Lafferty. Michael graduated from Ionia High School in 1964. He married Peggy Rodgers on September 4, 1965, and together they raised their family in Paris and Hersey. Michael was a member of the Big Rapids Congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses. His family, his faith and flying were Michaels passions in life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Michael is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Peggy Lafferty of Big Rapids; three children, Bart (Sara) Lafferty of Three Lakes, Michigan, Patrick (Michelle) Lafferty of Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Amanda (Ryan) Morrisey of Methuen, Massachusetts; five grandchildren; four siblings and many nieces and nephews. Michael was an instructor of HVAC at Ferris State University for 27 years, retiring in 2005. He since then managed the Roben-Hood Airport. Mike, as a private pilot, loved general aviation and he loved the airport. The home-baked cookies, fresh coffee and friendly staff were all in place because he wanted this destination to be the friendliest anywhere. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one son Matthew Lafferty. A memorial service will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2017, at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Brian Laughhann officiating. The family will greet friends beginning at 2:00 p.m. until the time the service begins at the funeral home.
