Obituary

Meredith Will "Meredy" Totten, age 76 of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011. He was born June 20, 1934 in Big Rapids to Will and Faun (Marvel) Totten. On June 23, 1956 he married Sue Thompson of White Cloud, the daughter of Frank and Jessie Thompson. Meredy worked as an equipment operator for Summerville Construction and Van Ess Construction until 1966. He then went to work for Volkswagen of Big Rapids where he worked for 17 years until Volkswagen closed. Meredy and his long time friend and co-worker, Chuck Franklin opened "Chuck and Meredy's Auto Service" in Big Rapids in 1983 where he worked until his retirement in 1996. Meredy and his wife Sue loved to travel in their motor home. Every winter they went south to Alabama, Texas and in 1999 they began wintering full time in Crescent City Florida. He loved to go to country Western Concerts, fishing with his nephews and hunting with his sons. He enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour books and liked to camp. Meredy liked to make caramels at Christmas and loved sharing them with his friends. He will always be remembered for volunteering and helping folks out. He is survived by his loving wife Sue, his daughter, Carmen K. Totten of West Bloomfield, MI; 2 sons Martin (Denise) Totten of White Cloud, Tim (Karen) Totten of Brant, MI; 4 grandchildren, Michael, Will, Hailey and Benjamin Totten; 6 Step-grandchildren, Joslyn Hicks, Brandon Maike, Mark, Jeanene, Daniel and Kyle Rodgers; 2 step-great-grandchildren, Zoey and Theo Rodgers; 2 sisters, Evelyn Dunn of Big Rapids, Elsie LaMarr Grosbeck of Zephyrhills, Florida; many nieces, nephews and loved in-laws. Besides his parents, Meredy was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Kenneth, Johnnie, and Thurman Totten, 3 sisters, Maxine Howard, Betty Lintemuth and Juanita Benson and a granddaughter, Mandy Sue Totten. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 28th at the Grant Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Lyle Ball officiating. The family will greet friends at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids on Tuesday, April 26th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at Big Prairie Cemetery near White Cloud. Memorial contributions in Meredy's name may be made to either the Grant Center United Methodist Church or the Georgetown United Methodist Fellowship Church, Florida.
