Melvin L Smith, age 88 of Barryton, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Metron of Big Rapids. He was born July 16, 1919 in Logan Township, Michigan to Grover Cleveland "George" and Nellie (Atherton) Smith. Melvin was honorably discharged from the United States Army serving during WWII. He was a retiree from Ferris State University and received his GED from Chippewa Hills the same year as his daughter's graduation in 1972. Melvin married Agnes Bonham September 7, 1957 at the Barryton Church of God. They made there home in Barryton where they attended the Church of God and the Free Methodist Church. The last few years they where attending the South Evart Free Methodist Church until declining health. Melvin was an avid gardener, bird enthusiast, and enjoyed feeding the squirrels. Mr. Smith is survived by five loving children: Barbara (Jim) Ruble of Ft. Wayne, Indiana Elaine Main of Barryton Deborah Scott of Rodney Cindy (Robert) Wixon of Farwell Melvin (Lynette) Smith of Escondido, California Three Sisters-in-law: Jenette Smith Irene (Lewis) Tanner Alice (Rex) Earle all of Barryton Five Grandchildren, Nine Great-grandchildren and several caring nieces and nephews that adored him. Besides his parents Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Agnes on Dec. 8, 2004 and four brothers; Ivan, Vern, Irwin and Jesse. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Barryton Free Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Davis and Pastor Tom Doherty officiating. A committal service will follow at East Fork Cemetery in Barryton. The family will greet friends on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton. Memorial contributions in Melvin's name may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
