Mary O'Neil, age 88, passed away Wednesday, January 06, 2010 at Altercare of Big Rapids. She was born August 27, 1921 in Aetna Township the daughter of John and Nellie (Plank) Buchanan. Mary graduated from Morley High School in 1940 and soon after married John O'Neil. They made their home in Morley for many years. Mary had worked for Denham Manufacturing and later at Wolverine World Wide in Big Rapids retiring in 1985. Mary loved the game of Baseball. Not only was she an avid Tigers fan, but she liked watching anyone play a good game of baseball, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting and made her family and friends many beautiful items they will treasure forever. Mary had attended the Green Country Church for over 60 years. In that same building Mary had attended grade school when it was called the Green School and later attended church with her family when it was the Green Sunday School. Mary is survived by 4 beloved children; Linda (James) Vredenburg of Stanwood, Tom (Katherine) O'Neil of Stanwood, Kenneth (Martha) O'Neil of Morley, Bonnie (Alan) Thebo of Rodney; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John O'Neil in 1972, a son Gary "Red" O'Neil in 2001, 2 brothers, Claude and Donald Buchanan and a sister, Daisy Smothers. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Reverend Robert Stillson officiating. The family will greet friends on Friday at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be at Croton Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mary's name may be made to the Green Country Church.
