Mary J. Buss, age 88 of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, December 10, 2007. She was born January 10, 1919 in Kingston to Howard and Ella (Sales) Mahaffy. She married Robert Buss in Muskegon in 1949. Together they made their home in Grand Rapids where Mary worked as a purchasing agent for A. & P. Grocery and later was the manager at The Red Coach Restaurant. They moved to the Big Rapids area in 1970 where Mary was a volunteer at Altercare of Big Rapids, a driver for the Commission on Aging, volunteered at the Family Independent Agency, volunteered for R. S. V. P. and Green Thumb. Mary also tutored for Big Rapids elementary students. She was a member of the V. F. W. Post #4102 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons; Kenneth (Dawn) Buss of Reed City Raymond (Rose) Buss of Stanwood five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Buss in 1979, a sister, Carrie Butler and three brothers, Bobby, Clarence, and LeRoy Mahaffy. Memorial services will take place 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15th at the First Baptist Church, 200 S. Stewart Ave., Big Rapids with Pastor Bruce Peterson officiating. A memorial under the auspices of V. F. W. Post #4102 Ladies Auxiliary will also take place. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services.
