Marvin Eugene Snavely, 89, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at The Brook of Big Rapids. Marvin was born on November 12, 1935, to Russell G. and Minnie V. Snavley and grew up on the family farm. A lifelong resident of Big Rapids, Marvin left an indelible mark on his community through his kindness, dedication, and hard work.
During his senior year of high school, Marvin began working at Curries Gas Station, where he spent many years and established numerous enduring relationships. While at Curries, he earned his Associates degree at Ferris State University. He went on to serve as a mail carrier with the Big Rapids Post Office for over 30 years, a role he thoroughly enjoyed. He loved being outdoors, delivering mail across town, and forming lasting connections with the people he met along the way.
Marvin was a devoted family man, kind-hearted, and always up for fun. His children and grandchildren will remember him attending their athletic events, dance recitals and musical performances. Special memories include arriving hours early to baseball games to circumnavigate old Tigers Stadium, jogging to college football games in the fall, playing miniature golf, camping, and remaining involved with them throughout his life. His friends and family admired his positive outlook, quick wit, and ability to bring joy to those around him. Whether through his infectious laughter or lighthearted teasing, Marvin had a gift for making others smile.
A tireless worker, Marvin often held two or three jobs at a time to provide for his family. He was a member of the 3rd Avenue Church of God, where he faithfully volunteered in various roles. Marvin maintained an active lifestyle even during retirement, often lending a hand to meet a need for friends and family. His commitment to service extended to his country, as he proudly served 20 years in the Michigan National Guard.
Marvin is survived by his sons, Mark (Jana) Snavely of Mars, PA, and Brad (Kelle) Snavely of Scottsdale, AZ; his sister, Diane Johnson; brothers-in-law, Dale (Kathleen) Cousineau and Arden (Verna) Cousineau; sister-in-law, Karen (Robert) Snavley; his grandchildren, Jaron (Allison) Snavely, Jenna (Luke) Potutschnig, Jathan Snavely, Jonathan (Erin) Snavely, Christine (Daniel) Bloecher, Matthew, Sophia, and Josiah Snavely; and his great-grandchildren, James, Lukas, and Joelle. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Ellen; and his siblings, LaVerne, Dorothy, Leola, Eldora, and Don.
A memorial service to honor Marvin's life will take place on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes of Big Rapids at 11:00 am. Visitation will take place one hour prior at 10:00 am.
