Marion O. Maneke, age 86 of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at Spectrum Butterworth in Grand Rapids. She was born July 25, 1922 in Mecosta County the daughter of Archibald and Florence (Leiter) Malett. Marion graduated from Mecosta High School. She married Arthur A. Maneke on April 12, 1942 in Rodney. Following Arthur's return from serving in World War II the young couple moved to Big Rapids to make their home. Besides raising a family, Marion also worked as a seamstress at Fashion Industries and later at Wolverine World Wide, both in Big Rapids. Marion always took great pleasure in her ability to sew. She did alterations and projects for many friends and family members. Marion was a faithful member of the Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, where she especially enjoyed helping with the Wednesday Soup Kitchen. She is survived by 3 children, Richard (Lee) Maneke of Lakeview, Alice (Gordon) Brockway of Morley, Sharon (Rob) Short of Kalkaska; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and her in-laws including, Sonny and Betty Johansen, James and Ida Mae Maneke, Dale and June Maneke and Christina Larson. Marion was preceded in death by her husband Arthur on November 25, 1998, a brother, Carl Anderson, 2 sisters, Lillian Brown Schoffner and Ruby Lindsey and a half sister, Eleanor Smith. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 22nd at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Michael Riegler officiating. Burial will be at the Rodney Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Friday. Memorial contributions in Marion's name may be made to the Third Avenue Methodist Church in Big Rapids.
