Obituary

Marilyn Ann (Burns) Jones, age 83, of Reed City passed away Thursday, June 16, 2022. Marilyn was born on July 25, 1938 in Muskegon to Ora and Ellen (Berggren) Burns. The family moved to Reed City when Marilyn was a small child. She attended Reed City Public Schools, was a Coyote cheerleader, and graduated from Reed City High School in 1956 as valedictorian of her class. Marilyn married her high school sweetheart, Ervin Jones Jr., on June 23, 1956. The couple lived in Texas and Massachusetts while Erv served in the U.S. Army. Upon returning to Michigan, Marilyn and Erv supported each other while attending college and earning teaching certificates. Marilyn successfully balanced her role as mother to three small children with her college education and graduated with honors from Ferris State College in 1967. She taught seventh and eighth grade science at Reed City Middle School until her retirement. During her tenure at Reed City Public Schools, Marilyn also served as middle school cheerleading coach and assistant high school track coach. Marilyn enjoyed traveling, playing the piano and fiddle, dancing, cooking, sewing, tennis, softball, bowling and playing bridge with her friends. She also loved boating, fishing, and attending her childrens/grandchildrens activities. Marilyn learned to play the fiddle after retiring, using an antique instrument she inherited from her father. She played and sang in several bands for dances and concerts around the Reed City area. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rose Marie Wolverton; daughter-in-law, Martha Jones; and husband Ervin Jones Jr. She is survived by her children, Karen Benson, Bruce Jones, and Michael (Heidi) Jones; grandchildren, Brittany (Benson) Allen, Caitlin (Jones) Bearss, Sarah Benson, Corey Jones, Tyler Jones, Jordan Jones, and Kelsey (Jones) Boylan; and eight great-grandchildrenwith another one on the way! Marilyn touched the lives of numerous people in Reed City and the surrounding community, including thousands of students, colleagues, friends, and extended family. Her legacy will endure through the lives of those she influenced. Arrangements are being handled by Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Reed City United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family at the church will begin at 9:00 a.m. The memorial service will begin at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Marilyn may be made to American Heart Association (www.heart.org).
