Marda G. Hughes, age 89 of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at The Brook of Big Rapids. She was born in Minnie, KY on June 25, 1934, the daughter of the late Arthur and Arettia (Preston) Mosley. Marda was a 1952 graduate of Wayland High School, where she was the head drum majorette. She attended Mayo State College in Paintsville, KY. It was there that she met her beloved husband Reverend Jack Hughes; they married on August 23, 1952. Marda and Jack began their family in Kentucky then moved to Michigan. She raised her children and was the wife of a pastor, which included playing the piano for church and on Jacks radio show. Marda was a lifelong member of First Free Will Baptist Church where Jack was a minister for over 25 years. She also attended Reed City Church of the Nazarene and greatly appreciated the services that were held at the Brook. Marda showed her love in her cooking for others. She enjoyed playing bingo and arts and crafts. Marda was a talented musician, she was always active in her church, and looked forward to decorating for Christmas. Marda loved her grandchildren and they were her true passion. She is survived by her two children, Sharon (Bob) Hughes Conway of Pinckney and Michael (Pamela) Hughes of Big Rapids; six grandchildren, Kimberly Hughes McClurg, Tammy Hughes, Shandelee Hughes Johnston, Johnathon Hughes, Preston Hughes, and Christina Paul; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. Marda was preceded in death by her husband Reverend Jack Hughes on Easter in 2005, son Ronald Hughes, and five siblings. Funeral Services will take place 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Reverend Jeremy Wicks officiating. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 26th at the Funeral Home.
