Manuel "Junior" Nelson, age 85 of Big Rapids, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2009 at his home. He was born August, 5, 1923 in Barryton to Manuel and Jennie (Cook) Nelson. Manuel was honorably discharged from the United States Army serving during World War II. Following the service he returned to Big Rapids and married Grace A. Baker on June 14, 1947. For many years, Manuel was employed at Big Rapids Furniture and was instrumental in the formation of their union. When the furniture business moved from Big Rapids, Manuel took a position in the Maintenance Department at Ferris State University, where he worked until his retirement. Manuel was a member and past president of the Mecosta County Rod and Gun Club. Fishing and Woodworking were his passions. Manuel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Grace; a son, Stan (Gerri) Nelson of Alpena; 2 grandsons, Nathan (Lisa) Nelson of Portland, OR, Eric (Adina) Nelson of Noblesville, IN; a great-granddaughter, Raina; a foster daughter, Nancy Houck of Big Rapids; a sister, Geraldine Bonsol of Sheridan; several nieces, nephews and dear friends. Besides his parents, Manuel was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Stanley, Rutherford and Roy Nelson; 2 sisters, Velma Boersma and Eleanor McIntosh. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Contributions in Manuel's memory may be made to Hospice of Michigan with envelopes available at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids where arrangements were made.
