Obituary

Lucille Mae Scharrer Smith Doyle Cutting passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022. She was known to all her friends as Lou. Lou was married three times, Ted, Pat and Roger, two of them we like (the third one not so much). Lou was born in Flint on October 9, 1925, she was the daughter of Carl and Leah Scharrer and the second oldest of 4 children. Lou had two sons, 7 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and another one on the way. Lou grew up during the depression which taught her many lessons that she would carry throughout her life. The work ethic that her heirs all carry today is because of this woman. She graduated from Weidman High School where she was top in her class, (granted there was only 10 people in the class, but she was right up there) she was also a cheerleader and the forward on the womens basketball team. There was not a harder working person out there. She worked as a waitress in her Dads restaurant as a young girl. When her husband Ted went off to serve in World War II, she was left to take care of their son Roger and run the farm. When he came home she worked three jobs. In the mornings as bookkeeper at the local grocery store, in the afternoons at the Post Office and on the weekends she sold Avon products to all the local ladies. Eventuality Lou was hired full-time by the Weidman Post Office where she retired after 25 years of service. When she retired she didnt sit on the porch in a rocking chair, she traveled all over the country with her husband Pat. They enjoyed camping, cruising and finally becoming winter Texans. She was not afraid to try new adventures and even learned to ski when she was in her 60s. Lou was very competitive and loved to win. This is probably where most of you sitting here today get it from. Right up to her very last days she was playing Bingo three times a week and was upset if she didnt come back with something. Some of the people at assisted living knew how competitive she was and would give her one of their prizes if she didnt win just to calm her down! Lou had an artist side, she loved to paint, carve wood and make craft items. Matt, Stephani and Stacy you can thank your Grandma for your talents. Some of your best memories will be the times up on the hill in Central Lake. The campfires, making Tonkas for supper and smores for dessert, swimming in Torch Lake and looking for Petosky stones along the Lake Michigan beach and the sunsets from the hill. Lou leaves behind a legacy that will live on for many generations to come. She will always be in our hearts and remembered as the supportive mother, loving Grandmother and friend to hundreds of people throughout her lifetime. She is survived by her son, Jim (Susan) Smith of Big Rapids; 7 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild with another on the way. Lou was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and a son, Roger Smith. A Celebration of Lous life will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
