Lowell James "Jim" Keller, age 78, of Big Rapids passed away on Friday, October 29, 2010. He was born on July 1, 1932 to J. Morris and Stella (Royer) Keller in Prescott, PA where he was also raised. In 1953 he entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1956. Jim moved to Michigan in 1961 and made his home in Kalamazoo before moving to the Lawton area to raise his family. On August 10, 1962 he married Marilyn Raber in Paw Paw. Jim was a truck driver for over 20 years and a member of the Teamsters. Jim and Marilyn moved to the Big Rapids area in 1977 and bought Lakeland Grocery in Chippewa Lake. He enjoyed owning and operating the store for 25 years. Jim was also passionate about hard work, snowmobiling, building and a good game of solitaire. When he was able he was active in the community and volunteered on the Chippewa/Martiny Fire Dept. where he was the former Chief. Jim's legacy of playing tricks and the ability to make you laugh even when you didn't want to will be remembered by the family that survives him: 4 children, Gene (Richard) Shattuck of Grand Junction, Joey Douglas Keller of Valdosta, GA, Laura "Dale" (Chris) Hampel of Big Rapids, Dawn Elaine (Mary Peterson) Keller of Allegan and their mother Marilyn Johnson of Bloomingdale; 5 grandchildren Krista, Jennifer, Justin, Stephanie and Jessica who will keep the memories they have of a Garfield loving grandfather with a good sense of humor close to their hearts for years to come; one brother LeRoy (Anna) Keller of Bethelham, PA; one sister Evelyn (Ronald "Jim" ) Morgan of Myerstown, PA; five great-grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews, many extended family members and Mike and Mary of Creekside Manor AFC who have offered a loving home, care and support to Jim for the last four years. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday (tonight), November 1st at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2nd at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 12:00 p.m. (Noon) until the time of service. Graveside services will follow at Chippewa Lake Cemetery. Memorial donations in Jim's name can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
