Obituary

Louella A. Hilden, age 78 of Barryton, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022 at her home. She was born in Wise Township, Isabella County on October 13, 1943 to Elmer and Myrtle (Seaman) Lackie. Louella graduated from Kent City High School in 1961. She met Fred "Rick" Hilden at a church softball game and they eventually were married August 10, 1963. Louella worked outside the home but still managed her household and cared for her children. She and Fred retired to Barryton in 2004 and began their hobby farm. Louella tended to their flower and vegetable gardens and would can and freeze their produce. She was a woman of many talents; Louella was a self-taught seamstress, she also crocheted, and quilted. She was awarded Grand Champion at the Mecosta County Fair for her crocheting. Louella and Fred were active members of the Barryton Church of Christ. She started a Sewing Ministry where they made over 100 quilts and other items that were donated to nursing homes, cancer patients, and Barryton Fire Department. Louella and Fred enjoyed traveling together; visiting their family, going to Alaska and camping were some of their most treasured trips. Louella also won trophies in Sand Drag Racing competitions in the old Jeep that Fred built. She looked forward to boating and water skiing with family and friends. Louella will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and community. She is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Fred "Rick" Hilden of Barryton; three children, Paula (Mark) Taylor of Bessemer, Todd Hilden of Barryton, and Kathleen (Michael) VanKirk of Palm Bay, Florida; four grandchildren, Christina (Brandon) Mercer of Mentor, Ohio, Meghan (Adam) Williams of Orange, Florida, Kimberlee Taylor of Walker, and Michael (Sam) Koepke of Kennesaw, Georgia; four great-grandchildren and one on the way; three brothers, Merlin (Vicki) Lackie of Howard City, Larry Lackie of Barryton, and Dennis (Cindy) Lackie of Barryton; four brothers-in-law, Ronald (Janet) Hilden of Grant, David (Sandy) Hilden of Mattawan, Terry (Terri) Krulek of Crystal, and Jerry Hanson of Edmore; and many nieces and nephews.
