Obituary

Lois M. Shortsle, age 99 of Big Rapids, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2016. She was born November 27, 1917 in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Mishka) Wilker. Lois married Edward Shortsle in Toledo in August of 1943. Together they moved to Big Rapids in 1945 where they raised their three children. Lois was a devoted member of St. Mary - St. Paul Parish in Big Rapids since 1945. She was very active in all church and school activities. Lois was a member of the Parish Consul of Catholic Women, the PTO, she sewed for the St. Mary Church Bazaar for 45 years, and taught 5th grade religion. She also taught sewing to 4-H girls for 17 years, ran the St. Vincent DePaul House for 18 years, and was a member of the "Marthas". Lois is survived by two children, Karen (Paul) Troupe of Vancouver, Washington, Phillip (Kathy) Shortsle of Big Rapids; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Gary Wilker of Mesa, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Shortsle on May 4, 1975; daughter, Cynthia Brophy; grandson, Brandon Shortsle; and brother, Clarence Wilker Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with Father Michael Burt officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service Thursday at the Church. Lois will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Big Rapids in the Spring. Memorial contributions may be made in Lois name to the St. Mary Catholic Church or School in Big Rapids or St. Vincent DePaul.
