Obituary

Rev. Lewis W. Gould of Big Rapids, the former Pastor of Burk Memorial Church in Saginaw, was called home to his Lord on May 1, 2008 at the age of 87. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire to Vernor C. and Helen A. (Manter) Gould on October 27, 1920. After his mother passed away when he was 5 years old, he went to live with his Uncle Otis and Aunt Ora (Gould) Littlefield who raised him until he graduated from Manchester Central High School. He enlisted in the Army in October 1939 as a medical aid man. He was assigned to guard Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed. There he met and married Lorraine E. Walker on March 18, 1942. He served under General Patton and he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After discharge from the service he returned to Midland where he was employed by Dow Chemical in their plant protection department for 33 years. He served on the Larkin Township fire department for many years and assisted in getting it started. After accepting Christ, he completed his theology degree at Olivet Nazarene College and was ordained as a minister in 1969. He served as a pastor at Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Midland, Burk Memorial Church in Saginaw and many other churches throughout the state of Michigan. Lewis and his wife Lorraine moved to Canadian Lakes, Michigan in 1975 where he was active with the water patrol, Canadian Lakes Players and the Merri-Men Singers. Through Compassionate Ministries and Work & Witness he served as a short-term missionary to Costa Rica, Venezuela, Honduras, Guam, Russia and served one year at the Twin Wells Indian School in Arizona. After the passing of his first wife, he married Margaret Turner of Big Rapids in January 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lorraine and son Robert V. Gould. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Turner Gould of Big Rapids, brother Homer(Joyce) Littlefield of Exeter, New Hampshire, daughters Helen A. Arens (Joseph)of West Olive, MI and Sheryl A. Jammer (Dennis) of Midland, MI, sons Lewis W. Gould Jr. (Donna) of Twining, MI, Roger O. Gould (Jonnie) of Fife Lake, MI,Ralph L. Gould of Golden, CO, step-sons John Turner(Barbara) and Lon Turner(Violet) both of Big Rapids, MI and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will take place 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 4th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Harold Gilkerson officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider the Church of the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries for those wishing to give memorials.
