Lewis "Jack" P. Carman, age 93 of Mecosta, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his home with loved ones at his side. He was born on August 2, 1914 in Millbrook Twp. to Earl and Mabel (Phillips) Carman. He graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1933 and worked at Oldsmobile in Lansing. During WWII he took a position with Nash/Kalvinator making plane propellers. On December 18, 1937, Jack married his wife Celia Johnson of Mecosta, they were married for 62 years before she preceded him in death in 1999. He worked for the Michigan State Highway Dept. bringing him back to the Mecosta area which he loved and had fished during his youth. He had the Carman/Wernette Block & Construction company, Carman Retail Lumber Co. and was the Morton Twp. Building Inspector until he retired in 1986 at age 72. Jack and Celia wintered in Las Vegas, Nevada for many years and in the last few years Jack wintered in Riverview, Fla. He was an avid card player whom you could find most everyday at the Mecosta County Senior Center where he had several wonderful friends. He attended Chapel of The Lakes Lutheran Church during the summer months and in the winter Horizon Christian Church in Brandon, Fla. He was a member of the Ruskin, Fla. Moose Lodge and an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Jack and Celia had four children: Patricia (Robert) Forbes of Mecosta John (Bonnie) Carman of Mecosta Barbara (James) Pennington of Reed City Ruth E. (Steve) Bishop of Mecosta 15 Grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one niece, two nephews and a special friend Roslyn "Connie" Daniel whom he enjoyed doing things with. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife Celia and a sister Phyllis Gunts. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Jack's life will be held at the Chapel of The Lakes (9407 90th Ave., Mecosta) at 11:00 a.m. on his 94th birthday, Saturday, August 2, 2008 In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions in Jack's name be given to the Mecosta County Senior Center or Heartland Hospice of Fremont. Arrangements and care entrusted to the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton.
