He was honorably discharged in 1946 also serving time with the Merchant Marines on the Good Will Tour. On June 25, 1949 Lester married Betty Whitney and together they made their home in Remus. He was self employed for close to 40 years starting Howard Ford Tractors in Mt. Pleasant and Howard Dairy Systems in Remus. While his children were growing up Lester was the local scout master. Lester was a proud, strong and independent man who enjoyed snowmobiling, going to the family cabin, motorcycles, hunting, photography, walks in the woods, a good joke and in his own words "take me to my bunk for a good nap."
