Obituary

Leonard "Bud" Theodore Hanline I, 97, passed Monday June 19, 2023 at his daughters home in Hersey after a battle with late onset dementia. He was born August 22, 1925 in Ionia, the son of Walter and Vera (Heilman) Hanline. His sisters were Mae Hanline Flint and June Hanline Shattuck. He attended Ionia High School until enlisting in the United States Army in 1943. Bud was on active duty for two years and two months before his honorable discharge. He entered France on the beaches of Normandy and fought in an artillery company in the Battle of The Bulge. Bud received the Bronze Star for Valor in combat. His unit liberated a concentration camp where he witnessed the horror and took pictures of the victims and survivors. He was stationed in Austria for several months following VE day. He met Doris Lou Durrett in Baltimore in 1944 while on pass from his Army post before shipping out to England. They corresponded throughout the war. Upon sailing back to New York and arriving at Christmas time in 1945, he took a train to West Virginia where they wed on January 2, 1946. He took his new bride to Ionia to live briefly at his parents home. Bud completed high school and worked briefly with his father at the Ionia County Road Commission. They lived in Ionia and Bud worked at General Motors Fisher Body on Alpine Ave. in Grand Rapids for 30 years before his retirement in 1978. They moved to Tubbs Lake near Barryton in 1996. Bud and Doris were married for 59 years before she passed in 2005. He was active in Little League Baseball as a coach, administrator and an umpire. He umpired the Little League World Series at several age levels for baseball and softball. In 1968, he was the first Michigan representative to umpire a World Series in Williamsport, PA. He also umpired high school games for over 50 years. Bud was active with Boy Scouts and a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of Veterans groups and served as Chaplin for the American Legion Post in Barryton. He loved to dress as Uncle Sam in parades and to give prayers and speeches about soldiers at veteran related holidays and to school children. He was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge reaching the Pilgrim level. He operated Bingo at the Ionia and Evart lodges. He loved to bowl and take group bus trips to casinos. Bud was a lifelong follower of the Detroit Tigers and watched endless ESPN during college softball and baseball tournaments. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, archery, and mushrooming. He and Doris appeared on Michigan Outdoors with Mort Neff after winning Mesick Morel Hunting competition. He loved catching and eating bluegills and sharing the pontoon boat with family. At age 92, he shot the largest buck of his life at the Chase hunting property they bought in 1961. He is survived by his son, Lenny (Sue) Hanline of Lowell; daughter Naomie (Jack) Reed of Hersey; grandchildren, Nick (Jenn) Hanline, Beth Hanline, Clairese (Matthew) Zierke, and Korey and Lowell Clark; great-grandchildren, Justin Hanline and Katelyn Rodriguez. The family would like to recognize Royal View Retirement Community and Hospice of Michigan and their staff who provided care to Bud in recent years. Bud loved to support childrens charities with a special fondness for those assisting Native Americans. Memorial contributions may be made in Buds name to Hospice of Michigan. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 23, 2023 at Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton with visitation an hour prior and on Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Bud will be laid to rest next to Doris at Balcom Cemetery in Ionia.
