Lawrence D. "Larry" Clarke, age 86 of Morley, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born February 28, 1931 in Evansville, Illinois, the son of Lawrence A. and Vera (Burcham) Clarke. Larry joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served his country during the Korean War on the USS Buck and the USS Badger. After he was honorably discharged, he returned home to receive his GED and ultimately his diploma. Larry married Judy Sayers on April 12, 1969 in Caro.
He was employed by various township police departments throughout his 28 year career; concluding as Police Chief for the Muskegon Charter Township. Larry retired as the Superintendent for the Highway DPW in 1994. He then moved to the Morley-Stanwood area and began managing the Stanwood Marina for 15 years. Larry enjoyed puttering in his garage. He was known to many as a "Wheeler Dealer", always willing to trade items that he fixed for another project.
Larry is survived by his wife, Judy Clarke of Morley, daughter; Leesa (Randy) Doctor of Muskegon; two grandchildren, Brian (Stephanie) Doctor and Jennifer (Lucas) Merrill; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kennedy; brother, Ronald (Judy) Clarke of California; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will take place Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood. The family will greet friends from 5pm to 8pm Friday, March 17th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids and again one hour prior to the service, from 10am to 11am, at the church on Saturday.
