Larry Austin Dent, passed away at the age of 67 on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 in Cedar, MI after a valiant battle with cancer. On March 14, 1947, he was born in the middle upstairs bedroom of the family farm in Sherman City (Lake), MI to Austin and Ida Mae Dent. Larry worked hard on the farm with his two sisters, Eleanor Kay and Shirley. He was valedictorian at Weidman High School and went on to study computer engineering at Michigan State University. During his final year at MSU, he started working at Michigan National Bank, where he worked for 18 years. Following an honorable discharge from the US Army he served for several years in the Michigan Army National Guard. Larry went on to work for EDS and spent the next two decades as a project manager for various computer system companies. He had a huge grin that involved curled up lips and every tooth in his mouth showing. After retiring, he moved to Fort Myers, Fla. where he enjoyed the sunshine and playing softball with friends. Larry is survived by his sister, Shirley (Larry) Tingay; children, Jacob (Janelle) Dent and Lara (Andrew) Kaiser; stepchildren, Tony (Deanna) Spangler, Richard (Nicole) Spangler, Andrew (Angela) Spangler, Theresa (David) Gersenson; 11 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Eleanor Kay; and granddaughter, Darcy Spangler. Visitation will be on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton, MI. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Larry will be laid to rest this coming year with military honors.
