Kristine Bergelin Andres, 65, a lifetime resident of Big Rapids, died on March 9th, 2010, at home after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Kristi was born on April 29th, 1944, in Washington D.C, to John O. and Helena Campbell Bergelin. She graduated from Big Rapids High school in 1962 at the top of her class and continued on to Duke University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. In 1967 Kristi married Steven P. Andres of Big Rapids. Kristi is survived by: her husband, their two children; Sheilah Brandon of Seattle, Washington and Loren Andres and his wife Melissa Caldwell of Austin, Texas, her two sisters; Janet Little of Annapolis, Maryland and Molly Walker and her husband Jim of Nathrop, Colorado, and 16 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Early in her career, Kristi worked for the Berg House selling furniture designed and made by her Uncle Robert Bergelin. Later, she worked in the field for the Girl Scouts of America and for the Ferris State University Lundberg Bookstore, where she retired as manager of the trade book department and President of the Clerical/Technical Union. Kristi was also very active in community affairs including Treasurer of the Friends of the Big Rapids Public Library, member of; the hospital auxiliary, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, the Mecosta County Historical Society and an active advocate and volunteer for the Susan B. Wheatlake Cancer & Wellness Resource Center. In her personal time Kristi was an ardent Duke Blue Devils basketball fan, an avid bridge player, and a voracious reader. She was passionate about Haflinger horses and was a member of the American Haflinger Registry and Great Lakes Haflinger Association. She loved riding, driving and raising her Haflingers. Memorial services will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church Friday March 12, 2010 at 11am with a reception following in the adjoining parish hall.
