Obituary

Kenneth F. Nelson, age 74 of Stanwood, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, November 08, 2013. He was born October 30, 1939 in Ingham County, MI the son of Homer F. Nelson and Olive Marian (Shaffer) Nelson. Ken graduated from Williamston High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served four years until his honorable discharge in 1962. Ken married Barbara Irwin on June 6, 1964 in Lansing. The couple made their home in Mason where Ken was in the concrete construction business. In 1972 the family moved to the Morley area; Ken owned and operated a Dairy farm in Deerfield Township until his retirement. After selling the farm Ken built his present home on Rogers Pond. Ken was a member of AmVets post #1941 of Big Rapids and The American Legion Post #98, serving on the Firing Squad for many years. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie #4360 of Stanwood. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening and loved watching horse racing and sporting events of his grandchildren. Ken was an accomplished woodworker; he built his own home, cabinetry, furniture and arts and crafts. Ken is survived by his wife, Barbara Nelson of Stanwood; five children, Kendra (Matt) Klumpp of Vestaburg, Brant Nelson of Chippewa Lake, Devin Nelson of Remus, Darin (Jodi) Nelson of Big Rapids, Dana (Clinton Lenahan) Nelson of Lakeview; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathy (Wayne) Granger of Charlotte and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Keith Nelson; two sisters, Jackie Clark and Jane Jackson. Graveside services are being planned for a later date.
