Obituary

Kenneth L. Kelley, age 68 of Morley, passed away unexpectedly Monday February 14, 2011. He was born September 16, 1942 on the family farm in Aetna Township. He was the son of Theodore and Dorothy (Finch) Kelley. Kenneth graduated from Morley - Stanwood High School in 1961. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. On January 15, 1966 Kenneth married Marjean Steffensen. The couple made their home in Gowan, Colorado, Iowa and later returned to Morley where they have lived for the past 28 years. Kenneth was a truck driver and truly enjoyed his career; he took great pride in the fact that he had driven in all 50 states. For more than 15 years, Ken and Marjean owned and operated a successful dairy goat farm. Following retirement, Ken accomplished one of his life's dreams; he literally built his own home. He cut and milled the logs, he drew up the design and with the help of David Claypool, he finished the job. For the last six years Ken was a campground host for several federal campgrounds along US-37. He loved to hunt and fish. Ken grew a huge vegetable garden for his family and friends to enjoy. He especially loved woodworking, if it was made out of wood Ken could build it. Ken was a member of the Mecosta County Sherriff's Posse and the VFW Post #4102 of Big Rapids. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marjean; 2 daughters, Dawn (Greg) Colbert of Morley and Connie (Scott) Ripley of Stanwood; his mother, Dorothy Newman of Stanwood; 3 grand-daughters, Katie, Anna and Megan Colbert; 2 grand-sons, Jacob and Austin Ripley; a brother, Gary Kelley of Stanwood; a sister, Maxine (Frank) Delano of Lakeview; a half-brother, Kurt (Pauline) Kelley of Marquette; a nephew, Dean; 2 nieces, Debbie and Diane; and many extended family members including Mary Claypool and her son David of Morley. Preceding Ken in death was his father. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 18 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Phil Bongard officiating. The family will greet friends on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are being accepted by Ken's family.
