Julie Kay (Gahrs) Saum passed away peacefully on Friday, May 11, 2018. She was born in Detroit, MI on April 21, 1962 to John and Ella (Westcott) Gahrs. Julie moved to Big Rapids with her parents in 1965 and attended Big Rapids Public Schools, graduating in 1980. She then earned degrees in Respiratory Therapy and Nursing from Ferris State University. Over the years, Julie was employed by several health care agencies in Mecosta County. She enjoyed crafting, cooking and traveling. Her most memorable trip was a recent cruise to the Baltic Sea. Julie will always be cherished as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband Mike Saum of Big Rapids; children, SSG Daniel (Amanda) Cook of Fort Bragg, NC, Kerrina (Kyle) Rouech of Houston, TX, Maryrose (Jonathon) Robison of Grand Rapids, Nicholas (Nicole) Saum of Midland, SFC Jeffrey (Emilee) Saum of Fort Carson, CO, SGT Eric (Meghan) Saum of Fort Carson, CO; 8 grandchildren, Raelyn, Paisley, Heath, Wyatt, Josephine, Everest, Hunter, Hallie; her mother, Ella (Harvey) Hutton; her father, John (Carlene) Gahrs; her brother, John (Nancy) Gahrs of Dallas, TX and many other members of her extended family. Julie was preceded in death by a grandson, Jaxon Saum and her parents-in-law, Josephine and Donald Saum. A Mass of the Resurrection will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Saint Paul Campus Parish in Big Rapids with Father Jegar Fickel officiating. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, May 16th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to Mass at the Church on Thursday. Julie will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Big Rapids. Memorial contributions in Julies name may be made to Army Emergency Relief.
