Joyce A. Sawson, age 75 of Canadian Lakes, formerly of the Royal Oak area, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009 following an accident at home. She was born August 13, 1933 in Troy Township to Edward and Jewel (Edge) Reynolds. Joyce graduated from Royal Oak High School. She made her home in the area and worked as a financial officer for several years. Joyce will be remembered as having a love of theatre, acting, song and dance. She was an energetic member of the Stagecrafters Company in Royal Oak. Joyce moved to Canadian Lakes nearly 20 years ago where she was an active and beloved member of the community. She was one of the founding members of the Canadian Lakes Players; she was a member and past president of the Canadian Lakes Quilt Club, a member of Stage M. Theatre in Big Rapids. Joyce had worked countless hours for the Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity and made many friends through the Red Hat Society. She attended St. Michaels Catholic Church in Remus. Joyce is survived by her son; Michael (Lee) Sawson of Fox Lake, IL; 4 grandchildren, Jason (Sabrina) Sawson of Lapeer; John (Carolyn) Sawson of Royal Oak; Vanessa Sawson and Christopher Sawson both of Ferndale; 2 great-grandsons, Logan and Austin Sawson; several nieces and nephews and many lifelong and dear friends especially Al Aikin of Canadian Lakes. Besides her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas J. Sawson on September 27, 1993 and a son Mark and his wife Renee' Sawson. A funeral service in celebration of Joyce's life will take place 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Reverend Richard E. Shinn officiating. The family will greet friends on Tuesday (today) from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Joyce's name may be made to God's Helping Hands of Mecosta County. Funeral services are also scheduled to take place 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 15th at the Sullivan Funeral home in Royal Oak with interment at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley.
