Obituary

Joyce Ann Martiny, age 75 of Rodney, passed away Monday, November 12, 2012 at her home with her loving family by her side. She courageously fought a seven year battle with cancer. Joyce was born May 17, 1937 in Big Rapids, the daughter of Raymond and Ellen (Dinkel) Cox. As a child Joyce's family moved from Big Rapids to the Chippewa Lake area where she graduated from the Barryton Rural Agricultural School. She married her high school sweetheart, Gerald Martiny, on October 15, 1955 and together they made their home near Rodney. Joyce began her working career at Wolverine World Wide, then Big Rapids Furniture and later worked at Evart Products for many years. She was a member of the Chippewa Lake Community Church and their Ladies Club. Joyce was known for her cherry pies; during high school she won the Local, County, and Michigan State Pie Baking Contest. Joyce is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gerald of Rodney; two children, Randall (Krista) Martiny of Rodney and Cynthia (Gregg) Sanders of Big Rapids; five grandchildren, Heather (Rob) Dennis, Bobby Porter, Sandra Porter, Olivia Sanders, and Nathan Sanders; a step-grandson, Chad (Casi) Hilliard; two great-grandchildren, Lydia and Kallen Dennis; a step-great-granddaughter, Hunter Hilliard; her mother, Ellen Cox of Kalamazoo; two sisters, Rayleen (Tom) Lawler of Saginaw and Kathleen Thomas of Kalamazoo; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Martiny; her father, Raymond Cox; and her infant brother, John Cox. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2012 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Stephen Scott officiating. The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 14th and one hour prior to services on Thursday beginning at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Martiny Cemetery near Rodney. Memorial contributions may be made in Joyce's name to the Chippewa Lake Community Church or Hospice of Michigan.
