John A. Rohrs, age 86 of Canadian Lakes, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 9, 1934 the son of Theodore and Marie Rohrs. John was raised in Ridgewood, New York and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School. While in school he competed on both the baseball and swim teams.
John joined the United States Air Force, serving four years during the Korean War. He was stationed in Okinawa, San Francisco, and Long Island as an Air Traffic Controller. John also played baseball for the Air Force Team, traveling to other bases to play, including Japan.
He met his wife Bernice Wagenbach in high school and wrote to her while he was in the service. After John was honorably discharged, he married Bernice September 2, 1957, and together they raised their three daughters in Oceanside, New York.
John earned his accounting degree from St. Johns University in Queens, New York while working full time and caring for his family. He then began his career as an accountant, controller, and treasurer mostly in New York City in the Record Industry. John later earned an MBA in Management from New York Institute of Technology.
He enjoyed many years in Montauk, New York at the beach and sailing his 19-foot Cape Dory "Queen Elizabeth Bernice (QEB)" in Montauk. John and Bernice also lived in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey for 15 years making many friends. John was the Treasurer for the Four Seasons Community. Following retirement, John and Bernice traveled the world together. In 2016 they moved to Michigan where they sailed around Canadian Lakes in "Fancy Nancy" (their daughters pontoon boat). Together they were members of the St. Mary St. Paul Catholic Community. John had a sense of humor that made everyone happy and laugh. He also enjoyed debating politics and religion.
John loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren who he encouraged and playfully teased. John will be missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Bernice; three daughters, Patrice (Kevin), Michele, and Donna (Sue); two grandchildren; Christopher and Alexandra; four grand-dogs, Ernie, Nancy, Barbie, and Bode.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and sister.
A private Mass of the Resurrection will be held in Big Rapids, Michigan. John will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery in Long Island, New York, date yet to be determined.
