Obituary

John S. McHugh, age 83, lifelong resident of Morley, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2008. He was born August 7, 1924 in Morley the only child of John "Bert" and Nora (Donahue) McHugh. John enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged and returned to Morley. John married Anne E. Bechaz on June 19, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Big Rapids. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Morley and also worked at Ferris State University, retiring as a supervisor in 1989. John served on the Aetna Township Board of Review for many years. During his retirement John successfully ran for Mecosta County Commissioner holding that office for 10 years. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Howard City, American Legion Post #554 of Morley and V.F.W. Post #3306 of Howard City. John was a man of generous character; he went to war for his country, he served in public office for his community, he was a devoted member of his church and he raised a grateful family, whose members include; His loving wife of over 60 years, Anne McHugh of Morley Children; Sue Ferguson of Sparta Pat (Nancy) McHugh of Morley Peggy (Gary) Dubridge of Morley Karen (Kenneth) Mowan of Kalamazoo 8 grandchildren; Elizabeth and Amy Ferguson, Christopher, Melissa, Charles and Chad McHugh, Bradley (Kelli Thrush) Dubridge and Amanda (Tony) Bisbee, 4 great-grandchildren; Connor and Carly Dubridge, Cole and Anna Bisbee and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Howard City with Father James Wyse and Father Ray Bruck con-celebrating. A rosary will be prayed 6:00 p.m. this evening (Tuesday) at Christ the King Catholic Church in Howard City. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, Aug. 6th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be at St. Appolonia's Cemetery in Morley with military honors under the auspices of V.F.W. Post #3306 of Howard City. Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to Heartland Hospice in Fremont.
