John Horvath, age 82 of Howard City, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009. He was born June 14, 1927 in Grand Rapids the son of John and Velma (Lakatos) Horvath. John was honorably discharged from the United States Navy serving during World War II. He was employed as a cement contractor. John resided most of his life in Grand Rapids and had lived a little over 14 years in Howard City. John enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife. He liked hunting, fishing, family reunions with Hungarian food and Christmas Eve at his mothers. He is survived by 2 sisters, Helen Petz of Big Rapids, Jeanie (Bill) Wilson of Honor and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Julius Horvath and 3 sisters; Irma Evanczo, Mary Zalewski and Eleanor Wheeler. A memorial service will take place 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Gerald Switzer officiating. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of American Legion Post #98 Firing Squad of Big Rapids. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services. Interment of cremains will take place at a later date at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
