John "Tom" DeYoung, age 85 of Canadian Lakes, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Altercare of Big Rapids. He was born June 9, 1925 in Columbia, Mo., the son of William and Alta (Snow) DeYoung. Tom was a 1943 graduate of Whitefish Bay High School in Wisconsin. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy. While a student at University of Wisconsin, Tom ran track for the Badgers, earned his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and met his future wife, Jill Floden; they were married in 1948. Tom was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1956. Tom worked for Goodyear as an account executive for 33 years during which he successfully completed his master's degree in Business Administration at Kent State University. He was also a member in the Big Rapids Rotary Club. After retirement, Tom and Jill moved to Canadian Lakes where he was the first president of the Board of Canadian Lakes Property Owners Corporation. Tom worked at Ferris State University for two years as a plastics consultant and was a member of the United Church of Big Rapids for 22 years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jill DeYoung of Canadian Lakes; 3 daughters, Patricia Lea (Doug) Bock of AZ, Nancy Ann (David) Foster of Grand Haven and Jane Alta (Ken) Grossman of CA; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister Mary Jean (Robert) Hamblet of ND; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the United Church in Big Rapids with Pastor Jon Fleming officiating. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in Tom's name to the United Church of Big Rapids, 120 S.
