John "Jack" Cuthill Jr., age 86 of Big Rapids, formerly of Inkster, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012 in Grand Rapids. He was born June 4, 1925, in Detroit, the son of John and Margaret Cuthill. Jack was a proud graduate of Cass Tech High School. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army serving during World War II in the European theater. He married Rose Mary McKillop on July 31, 1948 and they made their home in Inkster. Jack was employed by the Detroit Main Public Library as their head printer. He retired in 1984 and moved to Big Rapids in the fall of 1985. Jack had many interests and talents. He was a lifetime bowler, beginning with his first team "The Lucky Strikes" coached by his father, to the last game he bowled just a few months ago. Jack followed the Red Wings, the Tigers, the Lions, tennis and enjoyed golf, a game he took up later in life. He was talented artist, creating on canvas and in stained glass. Jack had been a member of several Presbyterian Churches, most recently the United Church in Big Rapids. He had a beautiful voice and sang in every church choir he attended. Jack was a 3rd degree Mason. He joined the Detroit Commandery, which is 32nd degree Mason, and then joined Moslem Shrine which has a singing group called the Chantors that Jack was very active in. Jack was proud of his Scottish heritage. He was a survivor with a quick wit and a good sense of humor. His family was his entire life and those surviving include; his three children, Patricia (John) Thomas of Big Rapids, Jacqueline (Jeffrey) Newton of Sterling Heights, Glenn Cuthill of Big Rapids; five grandchildren, Ian (Heidie) Thomas, Stephen (Katie) Thomas, Sarah (Keith) Andersen, John Newton and Meghan Thomas; seven great-grandchildren, Cooper, Carson, Cass and Cauley Thomas, Abby and Gracie Thomas and Hunter Saum; survivors also include several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rose Mary (ne McKillop) Cuthill on May 3, 1991 and two sisters, Christine Pankas and Jane Wimmer. Funeral services will take place 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the United Church of Big Rapids with Pastor Jon Fleming officiating. The family will greet friends at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids on Friday, April 6th from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Memorial contributions in Jack's name may be directed to Area 5 Special Olympics.
