Janet Bateman, age 73 of Morley, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Mecosta County Medical Center in Big Rapids. She was born June 28, 1937 in Norwich, England the daughter Ellen (Blyth) Barker. In 1955 Janet made a trip to Morley, Michigan to visit her sister who was a wartime bride. While in Morley she met the young Marvin Bateman and married him on August 27, 1955. Together they made their home and raised their family in Morley. On May 1, 1962, Janet became a United States citizen, having a dual citizenship with Great Britain. Janet had been a Girl Scout Leader and also worked for the Council in Grand Rapids. She was an Avon Representative for over 30 years. Janet liked to feed and watch the birds, she especially enjoyed hummingbirds. Janet, not only loved her family, but she truly enjoyed her family. She leaves to cherish her memory; her beloved husband of over 55 years, Marvin; 5 children, Denise (Carl) Campbell of Otisville, MI, Lorna (Milan) Campbell of Otisville, Angela (Robert) Seaman of Morley, Steven Bateman of Morley, Linda (Neil) Campbell of Hazleton, IA, 19 grandchildren, 14, great-grandchildren with one on the way in September; a brother, Peter (Sylvia) Barker of Norwich, England, 2 sisters, Pat West of Telford, England, Betty Powell of Morley; many nieces and nephews. Besides her mother, Janet was preceded in death by, a brother, George Barker, a sister, Joan Cleall and her father-in-law and mother -in-law, John Asa and Lillian Bateman, who treated her as one of their own. Funeral services will take place 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Reverend Roger Cooper officiating. The family will greet friends on Friday at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Saturday. Spring burial will be at Aetna Township Cemetery in Morley. Memorial contributions in Janet's name may be made to the Green Country Church.
