James David Starr, age 80, lifelong resident of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at his home. He was born November 18, 1928 in Big Rapids the son of Elwyn and Delia (Ducheane) Starr. James was a graduate of Big Rapids High School. He married Beatrice Mursch on September 30, 1950; she preceded him in death on March 5, 2001 after 50 years of marriage. James worked for Hanchette Manufacturing in Big Rapids, retiring about 20 years ago. James made a life commitment to Johanna Hunt-Bowman and together they made a happy home. He was a member of the Stanwood Free Methodist Church. James will be forever remembered for the positive and lasting impression he made on everyone he met. He is survived by his loving family whose members include; His wife, Johanna, his daughter, Dawn (Todd) Aardema , grandson, Quentin Mayes and 3 great-grandchildren all of Big Rapids, granddaughter, Brianna Joy Aardema of Grand Rapids, sister, Marie (Gale) Esch of Rodney, 2 sisters-in-law, Ada Mahaffey of Stanwood, Arlene (Phil) Gibbons of Brighton, brother-in-law, Jim (Pauline) Mursch of Texas and many nieces and nephews. Step-children; Denise and Tony Lee of Big Rapids, Cheryl and Joe Rak of Fenton, Debbie Easton of Grand Blanc, Kimberly Skues of Jacksonville, NC, 10 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife Beatrice, James was preceded in death by his daughter Barbara Jean Starr and 2 sisters, Ruth and Avis. A memorial service will take place 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Ron White officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services.
