Obituary

Big Rapids: James "Jim" John Sofoulis III, age 76, passed away peacefully at Royal View Retirement Village in Canadian Lakes, MI shortly before midnight on January 15, 2021, the same day as his mom did years ago. He had been declining in health for several days. He was born February 26, 1944, in Big Rapids to James J. Sofoulis II and Maxine Isabel (Arnold) Sofoulis, on his mothers birthday. Jim was a long-time resident of Big Rapids. He enjoyed sports, participating in football and track for Big Rapids High School. He set a record for the track team which still stands unbroken. He liked to tell people this fact, leaving out the information that the event he set the record in was discontinued shortly after the record was broken. One of his jokes he could play on others. Following graduation from BRHS, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served his duties in Minot, N.D. at a SAC Air Force Base. He received a medical discharge from the service following a car accident that resulted in closed head injuries and his heart stopping, leaving him legally blind and paralyzed on his right side. He learned to walk and talk again and was able to live in his own home until nearly 2 years ago. He was as independent as his health allowed. Jim loved animals, feeding squirrels and birds. He had two koi ponds for years and delighted in their beauty. He was a "dog guy" for many years, sharing his home with various dogs of different breeds. Then several years ago following the passing of his Cocker Spaniel, Duke, a small cat appeared on his back patio. He patiently gained her trust and she became a house cat. In taking her to the vet to find out her health and age, he was told she was expecting. She gave birth to 4 kittens. Thus he was converted to a love of cats over dogs, which surprised even him. Over the years Jim volunteered with the Ferris Hockey team and kept their uniforms laundered. He enjoyed this work and attending the hockey games. Many of the hockey players kept in touch with him through the years and this meant a great deal to him. They included him in their team for the Katke golf tournament each year, which pleased Jim immensely. Jim has spent the past two years at Royal View under the care of the amazing staff and administration, recently moving to Elara Hospice Care there as well. All who provided him care were supportive, kind, and able to make him feel at home and a part of their Royal family. Jim is survived by his daughter and her family, Jonell (Junior) Combs and four grandchildren all of Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; sister Lynne D. Stewart of Big Rapids; brother William A. Sofoulis and wife of Mackinaw City; numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins. He also had some true friends that he treasured. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts, uncles and a cousin. Jim made his arrangements prior to his decline. He will be cremated with no memorial or service. All arrangements are through Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Because of his love of animals, he has requested that any donations be sent to A.R.C. of Mecosta County (Animal Rescue Coalition) in Big Rapids.
