James B. Scalf, age 75 of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at his home. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 8, 1947, the son of Thelma Scalf. Jim graduated from high school in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Marines. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart.
Jim married Barbara Cooley on April 8, 1980 and together they raised their family in Denver, Colorado and Morley. He was employed by Sobie Company Inc. as a journeyman finisher, retiring in 2009. He looked forward to hunting, fishing, and bowling but his favorite time was spent with his family, most especially his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Scalf of Big Rapids; seven children, Jenny Scalf-Johnson of Wayland, Jamie (Miguel) Hurtado of Boise, Idaho, Jimmy (Rachel) Hall of Greenwood, Indiana, Johnny Hall of Illinois, Tammy (Patrick Sr.) Grant of White Cloud, Michael Holst of White Wood, South Dakota, and Jeremy Holst of White Wood, South Dakota; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Cathy Sue Sutton of Largo, Florida; sister-in-law, Phyllis Harris of Stanwood; good friends Mike and Barb Weed; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, two brothers Donnie and Jeffrey, father and mother-in-law Raymond and Jeneva Cooley.
Military Honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 2022 outside at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. A Memorial Gathering will follow immediately inside until 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
