Obituary

James Richard Sabo Jr, 82, passed away in Grand Rapids on January 24, 2026. He was born on January 4, 1944 to James "Nick" Sr. and Gladys (Tripp) Sabo in Detroit.

On June 28, 1975, James married the love of his life: Carolyn Wilkie. Together they made their home in Morley for over 20 years. He served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1972, where he earned multiple awards for his outstanding service aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, during the Vietnam War. A man of many talents and quirks, James could often be found tinkering, painting, and building things. He loved to read, and he revered the Harry Potter series. James enjoyed watching old western movies, especially if they featured John Wayne. He also appreciated the build of a muscle car and the thrill of gambling. James was a family man through and through, and absolutely loved spending time with Carolyn and his grandkids.

James will be dearly missed by his children: James (Abby) Sabo III, Ryan Sabo, Kristi (Geoff) Bybee, and Matthew (Hannah) Sabo; grandchildren: Alexxis, Jordan, Ethan, Maverick, Maddie, Grayson, Emma, Sealey, and one on the way; great-grandchild: Kasen; siblings: Bobby (Jerri) Sabo, Johnny (Lisa) Sabo, and Tommy Sabo; as well as countless nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Preceding James in death are his parents; wife: Carolyn Sabo; and siblings: Gloria, Diane, Ricky, and Roseanne.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, January 31, 2026, 12:00 PM, at Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids. Visitation will take place from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Following the service, James will be laid to rest at Aetna Township Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to James's family.
