Obituary

James E. Lowden, age 76 of Rodney, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012 in Big Rapids. He was born April 9, 1936 in Detroit, MI the son of James K. and Claire (Lalonde) Lowden. At the age of 18 he joined the US Army where he became a paratrooper. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Jim was honorably discharged in 1958. On June 16, 1962, he married Ardis L. Fredrick in Big Rapids. He attended Ferris College before transferring to Michigan State University where he graduated with a Masters degree in geophysics. Jim was employed by several major oil companies. His career gave him the opportunity to travel worldwide. When he was able; Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He was an avid reader of all subjects, with a special interest in WWII history. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to those he leaves to mourn, including his wife of 50 years Ardis of Rodney; children, William (Glenda) Lowden of Germany, currently stationed in Afghanistan, Steven (Lynn) Lowden of Dallas, TX; adopted grandson, James A. Lowden of Rodney; 4 grandchildren, Alex, Elizabeth, Steve and Gavin Lowden; a sister Joan (Michael) Delehanty of Rochester, MI and many nieces and nephews. Jim went peacefully into the arms of the Lord, surrounded by his wife and loving family. Stories and laughter, many precious memories were shared. He now joins his beloved son Jimmy, who preceded him in death in 1992, his parents and parents-in-law; Clifton and Elizabeth Fredrick. A private memorial service will be held Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. He will be laid to rest at Pine Plains Cemetery in Big Rapids. Memorial donations in Jim's name can be made to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association.
