Those, family and friends that knew James A. Harper the best never thought the day would come that he would pass away. He was always something of an icon. He seemed to always exude self-confidence and had an air about him that he could not be defeated.
Jimmy left behind his earthly body at Harper Hill on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the age of 72. Jim was the youngest of three sons born to Clayton and Isabelle (Cope) Harper. He was born in Lansing on November 28, 1946 and raised in Lansing until his family moved to Chippewa Lake in 1959. Jim graduated from Barryton Rural Agricultural High School in 1966 and in July he joined the United States Army. Jimmy was honorably discharged in 1968.
He was always young at heart and had more stories and life experiences than there is paper to write on. Jimmy always had a motorcycle ready to ride, a boat or snowmobile in the yard, and generally speaking a smile on his face. Jim was ready to help anyone, at any time and at any place. He was forgiving, stubborn, strong-willed and determined.
When he was able to contribute or help, he was a member of: the Pere-Marquette Snowmobile Club, the D.A.V. and the American Hunting Club. Jimmy's one wish that didn't come to fruition, was making it to his 45th Wheatland. He was a key employee at Daggett and Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Barryton and Big Rapids from 2004 until September 2018, when his cancer became to painful.
Jim's body may be gone but his spirit will continue to be remembered by: his wife, Robin; a brother, Ed and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended friends and family that he unconditionally loved and treasured.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard in 1999 and several of his best friends.
At 1:00 p.m. July 2019, a celebration of Jims life will be held at Harper Hill, 11299 21 Mile Road, Evart.
