Jack E. Smith age 88, a lifelong resident of Mecosta, passed away Monday, December 18, 2023, with his wife Delores by his side. He was born March 6, 1935, the son of the late Earl and Bernice Smith. Jack was a 1954 graduate of Mecosta High School and later honorably served his country in the United States Army. He married Delores Root on March 8, 1958, at Faith United Methodist Church in Barryton. Together they raised their three children in the home they built in Mecosta and were members of New Hope United Methodist Church. Jack owned and operated Smith's Hardware; formerly known as Gambles Hardware and Service Star. He also drove bus for Chippewa Hills School District for several years. Jack was the former president in 1976 and a volunteer firefighter for the Village of Mecosta. He and Delores enjoyed country dancing, participating in dance demos, and traveling in their motorhome. Jack liked to debate with others, just for the fun of it to push their buttons. He looked forward to family camp with the Roots on the back 80 every year in October where the tradition of "Snipe Hunting" began. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Delores Smith; two brothers-in-law, Duane Root and Eugene Root; two sisters-in-law, Janet (Walter) Jenks and Barbara Root; special friends, John Mayer and his family; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his three children, Gail Annette, Randy Scott, and Bradley Keith; two sisters, Elaine and Maxine; and two brothers, Wesley and Kenneth; two brothers-in-law, Ora Root and Harry Root; three sisters-in-law, Berdella, Helen, and Sharon Root. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2023 at New Hope Global Methodist Church (formerly known as New Hope United Methodist Church) in Mecosta with Pastor Wayne McKenney officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charity of the Donors Choice.
