Jack Benson, age 79, of Stanwood, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. He was born on July 24, 1945, in Big Rapids, Michigan, the son of Gilbert and Maude Benson. Jack attended Morley-Stanwood Community Schools, where he made lifelong friends and excelled in basketball. He was proud to be part of an undefeated state championship basketball team. On August 29, 1964, Jack married Paula Ryan, with whom he shared many happy years raising a family in Stanwood. Paula preceded him in death in 2018. Jack worked as a welder and fabricator in manufacturing until his retirement. His true calling, however, was as a volunteer firefighter; he dedicated over 47 years to the Mecosta-Austin Township Fire Department, where he made a lasting impact with his selflessness and commitment to helping the community. Growing up on a farm, Jack developed a deep love for the outdoors that continued throughout his life. Known for his big heart, he was a friend to all, and his stories and friendships were as big and memorable as he was. Jack is survived by his children, Bonnie Lou Neal, Wayne Benson, Sven Benson, Jolene (Donny) Jones, Stosh Benson, Amanda Ansari, Wayland Benson, Wyatt Benson, and Conway Benson; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brother. He is also remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and several siblings. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with visitation from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.
