Herman J. Bacon age 97 of Big Rapids, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Metron of Big Rapids. He was born March 29, 1912 in Morley to John and Myrta (Hopkins) Bacon. Herman spent several years in the Detroit area where he worked as a carpenter before moving to Mayville. He enjoyed telling stories of farming in Mayville. For the last 30 years he has made Big Rapids his home. Herman attended the Third Avenue Methodist Church and was a faithful patron of K-Mart when he was able to make his daily trips. He loved to drive often taking long day trips. When he could no longer drive he walked or took his scooter around town. When Herman was younger he liked to hunt and fish. Over the last few years he enjoyed watching his great nephews play softball. Herman is survived by close nieces; Florence Pemberton of Big Rapids, Marty Cunningham of Gladwin and special friends Curt and Chris Ray of Big Rapids and several other nieces and nephews and friends. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services for Herman will take place 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with the family greeting friends two hours prior.
