Obituary

Helen (Smith) Knight, 95, of Big Rapids, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28th, surrounded by members of her loving family. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church in Big Rapids, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2013 with Father Michael Burt officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the mass on Thursday at St. Mary's in Big Rapids. Burial will be at St. Michael Cemetery in Remus. Visitations will be held from 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids, Michigan with a Rosary taking place at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary School, St. Vincent de Paul Society, or a charity of your choice. Helen was born December 2, 1917 in Mecosta, Michigan to Fred and Elizabeth Smith. She graduated from Mecosta Rural Agricultural High School in 1936. On January 16, 1937 she married Truman Eben Knight of Mecosta. Helen spent a good deal of her married life working and raising four active children. Besides living the majority of her life in Mecosta County, she and Truman spent four years in Detroit (WW II era) working in plants supplying materiel and equipment to the war effort. Helen worked for many years with her husband at Royce's Store in Mecosta before moving to Big Rapids. She also worked in the kitchen at St. Michael's School in Remus while her children attended school there. Helen also worked for a number of years in the food services area at Ferris State University. Helen will be remembered for her generosity in volunteering her time to her church, St. Vincent de Paul and several other charities, playing cards with friends and family, and making Philadelphia cream cheese pies. Helen is survived by four grown children, Gary (Janice) Knight of Lansing, Glenda (John Montgomery) Tellkamp of Big Rapids, June (Sam) Straub of Rodney, and Dale (Chris) Knight of Cadillac. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, 27 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, sister-in-laws Lucretia Starks and Mary Bringold and her very special friend Mary Sautter. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Truman, her parents, son-in-law Dick Tellkamp, brothers Alick, Carl, Larry and Glen Smith, sisters Frances Bauman and Marion Knight, and a granddaughter Tammy Straub.
