Hazel M. Marvel, age 81, a lifetime resident of Big Rapids passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at her home. She was born November 25, 1935, the daughter of Edgar and Blanche (Cook) Obert. Hazel married Glen Marvel on October 8, 1953 in Big Rapids, where they raised their family. She loved people and helping others. Hazel ran a daycare out of her home for many years before being employed by the Big Rapids School District driving bus for 26 years. She was a talented cake decorator; making cakes for weddings and birthdays. Hazel also taught sewing for the Mecosta County 4-H. She enjoyed the outdoors; growing and arranging flowers, fishing, camping and traveling the country with Glen. Hazel took great pleasure in organizing family reunions. She also liked the occasional trip to the casino because she was a winner. Hazel treasured her time spent with family and friends. She attended every activity her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in. Hazel lived life to its fullest and was very strong until the end. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Hazel is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years, Glen Marvel of Big Rapids; three children, Linda (Paul) Cole of Big Rapids, Larry (Deb) Marvel of Lowell, and Barb (Lynn) Goldthwait of Big Rapids; eight grandchildren, Joshua (Heather) Cole, Jennelle (Tony) Mis, Jillaine (Andrew) Defever, Jessica (Sean) Foote, Clayton Marvel, Brenton (Deanna) Goldthwait, Brittany (Ben) Kosmalski, and Logan Goldthwait; five great-grandsons, Griffin and Grayer Mis, Beckett Goldthwait, Silas Cole, Ryan Foote; and one great-grandson on the way in December, Benjamin Kosmalski III; one brother, Dewey (Sharon) Obert of Big Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Adeline Obert and Joan Obert both of Big Rapids; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Norm, Jim, Bill, and Gerald Obert; and two sisters, Betty Hanes and Nina Eldred. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm Friday, August 25th at the funeral home. Hazel will be laid to rest at Pine Plains Cemetery in Big Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made in Hazels name to Mecosta County Commission on Aging Transportation or Spectrum Health Hospice.
