Harvey Perrin Mumah born September 4, 1926, was welcomed into his eternal home on November 17, 2021. He lived a long life filled with meaning and purpose as he served Jesus Christ until his dying breath. His kindness, caring, and sweet spirit were experienced by everyone who knew him.
Harvey was born in Sand Lake. He was one of nine children born to parents Hazel Belle (Perrin) and Benjamin Franklin Mumah. He graduated from Morley Stanwood High School. He served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater during World War II. He married the love of his life, Donna Joan Hesley in 1950. They were married 53 years.
Together, they had two daughters: Terri (Mark-Ellen) Thurston and Georgia Mumah and two granddaughters Rev. Hillary (Rev. Dr. Vaughn) Thurston-Cox and Chelsey (Mike Zimberg) Thurston as well as one special great granddaughter Grace.
Harvey retired from ANR Pipeline after 23 years of service to the company. He also worked for Vita Boy, Wolverine, and Ferris State University in custodial services. He spent as many years in retirement as in the working world but was known to say that retirement was the busiest time in his life.
He was an active member of the Stanwood Free Methodist Church, volunteering as treasurer for many years as well as preparing the coffee and greeting guests each Sunday morning. He spent summers at the family cabin on the grounds of Manton Christian Camp.
Harvey became close friends with all his neighbors on 13th Street in Canadian Lakes. They understood what it meant to be good neighbors and their friendships meant to the world to him. Harvey volunteered for several years on the Canadian Lakes security team.
Family was incredibly important to him. He loved his wife Joan deeply. He was proud of both of his daughters. He rarely missed a grandchilds ball game or concert. He was thrilled to become a great grandpa. He looked forward to every family get together, particularly when homemade pie was served.
Harvey was a quiet man, but always willing to listen or offer a word of encouragement. He was a calm, steady anchor to his family. His love for Christ shown most brightly when he was given the privilege to serve others. He had ready smile, making friends wherever he went. He was humble and kind.
The last few years of his life were spent receiving care from the team at Altercare of Big Rapids. They provided him support and kindness, especially during the pandemic, when it became difficult for family to visit. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Joan, his daughter, Terri, and his siblings, Harold, LeRoy, Reah, Donna, Benjamin, Harvey, Arthur, and Thayne.
A Memorial Service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022 at The Woods Free Methodist Church in Stanwood with Pastor Ron White officiating. Contributions in his name can be made to: Stanwood Free Methodist Church or Manton Christian Camp.
