Harold E. Benson, age 92 of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully Friday, January 2, 2015 at his home. He was born August 4, 1922 in Norwich Township, Newaygo County, the son of Nels and Fanny (Carlson) Benson. Harold graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942 and was honorably discharged after serving in the European Theatre of World War II. Harold married Juanita and together they raised their family in the Big Rapids area. He enjoyed retirement for 32 years after working for more than 40 years in the Tool and Die industry. Harold was an avid outdoorsman who hunted and golfed until he was 90 years old. He is survived by two sons, Dick (Kim) Lintemuth of Grand Rapids and Roger (Jeanne) Lintemuth of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Linda (Phil) Cooper of CA; five grandchildren, Richard (Karen) Lintemuth, Matthew (Beth) Lintemuth, Tarin Lintemuth, Lynde (Bryan) Herzbach and Alan Lintemuth; three great-grandchildren, Megan, Calvin and Kyle; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dunn, Shirley Totten, Sue Totten and Elsie Lamarr Grosbeck; several nieces and nephews; a cousin, Edna Szymanski; and his special caregivers, Victoria and Andrea. Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Juanita Benson, who passed in July 2009; infant daughter, Sharon Benson, daughter, Sandra Kay; brother, Otto Benson; and his parents. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Bruce Peterson officiating. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8th at the funeral home. Interment will be at Hungerford Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in Harold's name to the 3rd Avenue Community Lunch Program or the Mecosta County Commission on Aging.
