Howard Vance "Bunk" Wood, 92 of Weidman, MI, passed away Monday, April 1, 2013 in the comfort of his home. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2013 at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Beal City, MI with Father Patrick Jankowiak officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Beal City. The family will greet friends at the gathering room of the church on Thursday, April 4th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Vigil beginning at 7:30 p.m., and on Friday one hour prior to mass from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions in Bunk's name can be made to Woodland Hospice. Bunk was born on May 22, 1920 in Sherman Twp., Weidman, MI, the son of the late Jesse Howard and Flora (Wagenman) Wood. He attended Tinker School and graduated from Sherman Township Rural Agricultural School (Weidman) in 1938. Bunk enlisted in to the U.S. Army Airforce in 1942. Upon his honorable discharged in 1945, he assisted on the family farm, was a substitute mail carrier and worked as a roustabout in the Sherman City oilfields before becoming an employee of SOHIO Petroleum Company in the Coldwater Oil Field, Lake, MI. Under the ownership of Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline, later American Natural Gas (ANR) Company then with Costal Companies he assisted with the conversion from oil to a gas storage field. Bunk retired from Costal Companies in 1986 after 40 years of service at the Coldwater Field. Bunk also served as trustee on the Sherman Township Board for 30 years and was a representative on the Nottawa-Sherman Fire Board. Bunk married Kathryn Appelgreen on June 27, 1945 in San Marcos, Texas. Together they raised 8 children. Bunk is survived by his children, Alan Wood and Gloria (Larry) McLachlan, both of Weidman, Diane (Donald) Johansen of Rockford, Jeanne (Steven) Metcalf of Mecosta, Gale (Andrea) Wood of Weidman, Mary Ellen (David) Butler of Blanchard, and Dean (Tina) Wood of East Leroy, MI; 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister Dorthea Bergquist of Mt. Pleasant, MI. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; daughter, Carol Ann Suman; infant son, Howard Lynn Wood; grandson Dennis Metcalf; granddaughter Hope Suman; and two brothers, Bernard "Pete" and Richard "Rick" Wood.
