Obituary

Howard Stuart Dague was born on October 28, 1915 to Oscar and Nettie Dague in Coldwater Township, Isabella County, MI and passed away on March 24, 2012 at his home. The family moved to Elm Grove, West Virginia and Stuart graduated in 1937 from Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, West Virginia. After graduation, he worked in the Wheeling based family owned Dairy Delivery business and returned to Michigan in 1937. In 1941, Stuart volunteered for the draft and served as captain for the last two years of his service. Stuart married Donna M. Cummings on January 14, 1943 in Coldwater Township. They resided at Camp Lee, Virginia; Fort Devins and Camp Edwards at Cape Cod until his discharge in 1946. They purchased their first diary farm in 1952 in Section 31 of Coldwater Township, Isabella County and later Section 30, also in Coldwater Township. Then purchased farms in Sections 25 & 36 in Fork Township, Mecosta County. In his youth he transported his Aunt Carrie Dague, who authored The History and Genealogy of the Dague Family to many family reunions in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He enjoyed collecting history of the family, never considering himself a genealogist only a historian. Stuart took his family to many cemeteries and they learned American History along the way. Stuart's occupation was as a farmer, raising dairy cattle and cash crops, however, education was his personal passion and directed much of his life toward its improvement. Stuart served on many boards including 17 years on the Barryton Rural Agricultural School Board, 1 year at the newly consolidated Chippewa Hills Schools combining Barryton, Remus, Mecosta and Weidman. Followed by 14 years on the board at the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School. Stuart was proud to see his wife and all his children graduate from college. Also, all his grandchildren are either in college or have graduated from college. After Donna retired they enjoyed traveling in their motor home through out the United States, Canada, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. They especially enjoyed their travels along the Rhine River through many countries in Europe. They developed many long term friendships along the miles of travel. Their marriage produced four children, 1944 James (Nancy) Dague, 1946 Diane M. Dague, 1949 Gloria (Gerald) Kilian, 1959 Daniel (Kendra) Dague. Five Grandchildren, Janell (Bryan) Lundy, Maureen (Jay) Peterson, Matthew Dague, William Dague and Dana Dague. Six Great Grandchildren, Alec, Bridget & Olivia Lundy and Annika and Gabrielle Peterson and Maci Mae Navarre. Four Step Granddaughters, Linda (William) Miesel, Joanne Polidoro, Mary Peterson, Julie (Bradley) Simmonds and nine Great Step Grandchildren, Bradly Sproule, Elizabeth Miesel, Daniel and Julia Polidoro, Brett and Beth Peterson, Brent, Courtney and Jenna Simmonds. Stuart was preceded in death by his wife Donna in 2010, a daughter, Diane in 1987, his brother H. Stanley Dague and a sister Elma Ridgley. Funeral Mass will be 11 am on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Remus, Michigan, where Stuart was a member.
