Gordon Glenn Hinken, age 85 of Mecosta, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 at his home surrounded by his whole family. He was born March 8, 1932 in Missaukee County, Coldwater Township, the son of Bernard and Hattie (Postma) Hinken. Gordon graduated from Manton High School in 1950.
Gordon married Marie Mowers on May 30, 1953 and they raised their family in the Lansing and Olivet areas. He was employed by General Motors for 39 years. Following his retirement, Gordon and Marie moved to Round Lake, near Mecosta. They loved living on the lake, traveling and hunting out west, and wintering in Florida together.
His passion was the outdoors; Gordon enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and guns. There wasnt anything he couldnt build or fix; Gordon was a perfectionist born with a wrench in his pocket. He liked tinkering and working on various projects in his pole barn; fixing cars, trucks, and engines.
He was loved and will be greatly missed. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marie Hinken of Mecosta; two daughters, Peggy (Edward) Boufford of Sparta and Janet (Larry) Klemanski of Olivet; two sons, Rick (Janet) Hinken of Olivet and Leon Hinken of Mecosta; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernetta (Murve) Lambers of Holland, Geneva (Kenneth) Hanson of Holland, and Hilda (Larry) Schwarck of Williamston; one brother, Vern (Ardys) Hinken of Holland; many nieces and nephews.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; and infant brother, Gordon Garrett; and three brothers, Donald Hinken, Bernard Hinken, Jr., and Orlo Hinken.
A celebration of life will take place 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Larry Schwarck officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gordon's name to the Mecosta County Commission on Aging Transportation, American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
