Gordon V. Helmer age 87, of Barryton passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007 at his home with his family at his side. Gordon was born July 29, 1919, in Sheridan Twp. to Arthur and Georgia (Heminger) Helmer. Gordon was born on the family farm, enjoyed farming and raising chickens. Gordon would go on to raise his family there and live all but eight years of his life on the farm. He was honorably discharged from the US Army serving in the South Pacific during WWII. Gordon married Louise Blodgett October 2, 1948 in Barryton. He retired from Ferris State University in 1981 where he had been a custodian at Taggart Hall. Gordon enjoyed lots of company, gardening, playing cards, dancing and spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed his relationship with his great granddaughter Taylor. Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Louise of Barryton, fours sons; Ron (Jackie) Helmer of Blanchard, Dave (Laura Place) Helmer of Barryton, Steven (Lori) Helmer of Barryton, Jeff (Linda) Helmer of Lake, and daughter Nancy (Ken) Loll of Barryton, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, brothers and sisters in law; Gertrude Helmer of Sears, Effie Helmer of Flint, Carol (Benn) Johnson of Weidman, Joe (Sandy) Blodgett of Farwell, Wanda (Dick) Helderop of Barryton, Iva Blodgett of Indiana , Margaret Blodgett of Goodrich and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Gordon was preceded in death by 7 brothers; Glenn, Russell, William, Bart, Collin, Harry, Ralph and 1 sister Jeanetta Olger. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 28th at the Barryton Church of Christ with Pastor Randy Piatt officiating. The family will greet friends at the Daggett Funeral home in Barryton on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions in Gordon's name maybe made to the Barryton Fire Dept.
