Obituary

Gordon C. Crandall, age 89 of Big Rapids, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 at his home. He was born June 25, 1925 in Austin Township, the son of Charles and Delma (Hollenbeck) Crandall. Gordon graduated from Big Rapids High School. He attended Ferris State University and the University of Arkansas achieving his bachelor degree. Gordon enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and graduated from Cadets as a Bomber Pilot serving during World War II. He married Deb Stokely on June 26, 1982 in Gaylord, MI. Gordon retired from the Michigan - Wisconsin Pipeline Company in 1983 after 34 years of service. He was a member of the Morley American Legion Post 554 and the Stanwood Lions Club. Gordon served as the president on the Morley-Stanwood Board of Education and the president of the Memorial Hospital in Stanwood. He enjoyed playing Dominos, Cribbage and Euchre. Gordon played semi-pro baseball for the Pittsburg Pirates in the position of shortstop. He was inducted into the Mecosta County Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Gordon also was a Detroit Tigers and Green Bay Packers fan. He is survived by his wife, Deb Crandall of Big Rapids; six children, Gayle Campbell of Grand Rapids, Connie (Michael) Betz of Portage, Ronald Crandall of Kentucky, Darrel (Sandy) Crandall of Holland, Kurt (Crickett) Crandall of Big Rapids and Walter (Melissa) Crandall of Missouri; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. Gordon was also survived by his sister, Barbara Jean Wilkinson of Grand Rapids; his two brothers, Herbert (Agnes) Crandall of New Hudson and Gary (Sally) Crandall of Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald Crandall. Funeral services will take place 1:00pm, Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Ron White officiating. The family will greet friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Wednesday, January 14th at the funeral home. Interment will be at Stanwood Cemetery.
